Low Back Pain
There are many injuries and pains that can be assessed and treated by physiotherapy. The following aims to highlight what can go wrong with the spine and how these problems can be resolved. We start with Low Back Pain, a condition that requires 7% of the population to contact their GP each year, resulting in 15million consultations.
LOW BACK PAIN
COMMON CAUSES
POSTURE: Sitting, lifting, driving and sports can all be a factor
FACET JOINTS (Zygapophyseal joint): Pain is often localised and aggravate by movement
INTERVERTEBRAL DISCS: This can lead to generalised low back pain or occasionally leg pain, commonly called sciatica
Back pain in its acute stage can be very painful. You may find you can't walk or even stand up properly. Pain relief and staying as mobile as possible can help. Try to avoid sitting for prolonged periods. The majority of back pain is usually resolved in 6 weeks. Chronic back pain however can be present for many months or years. It can however be helped by physiotherapy. It often does not stop you from completing daily tasks or sports but is a nuisance. Often patients request an X-Ray or MRI scan from a GP and are dissapointed when this is not advised. Imaging helps to identify a problem however the majority of the time, it does not change the type of treatment given. Physiotherapy can help to reduce the pain and get you back to normal function by educating on posture, strengthening your back, mobilising stiff facet joints and reduce load placed on the Inter-Vertebral discs.
