Shoulder Pain
Shoulder pain has many causes and can often be difficult to diagnose. A common diagnosis given is a Frozen Shoulder. This is where the capsule of the shoulder has become inflammed. There are a number of stages in relation to this diagnosis and it can be caused by trauma or happen for no apparent reason. A key diagnostic test for a frozen shoulder is limited external rotation. If you can't turn your arm out to the side, then a frozen shoulder may be the cause. Other causes of shoulder pain include impingement which can cause constant and intermittent pain. The bursa and tendons of the shoulder can be irritated causing pain and limited movement. Faulty movement patterns of the shoulder are a common cause of shoulder impingement. The shoulder can show signs of instability which can cause pain. You can also get pain referring from the neck . Often patient's describe pain at the back or across the top of the shoulder or behind te shoulder blade. Treatment includes re-education of any faulty movement patterns, stretches, strengthening, ruling out the neck and mobilisations with movement. If the pain continues then a referral to an Orthopaedic Consultant may be necessary.
